MCU - Making a Major Difference

Updated: Aug 28

In the ever-evolving landscape of risk, C&B's commitment to innovation and client service shines through in our specialized teams. This month, we're excited to spotlight the Major Claims Unit (MCU), a group that's redefining how we handle our most complex claims.

What is the MCU?

In the world of insurance, not all claims are created equal. When a routine claim suddenly becomes a potential financial nightmare, that's where the Major Claims Unit steps in. They are a specialized team in CBCS that is dedicated to handling our most complex and potentially costly cases.

The MCU focuses on high-stakes claims involving serious injuries, significant property damage, or complex liability issues, and their mission is twofold:

  1. To aggressively manage these claims, minimizing financial impact on our clients.

  2. To proactively identify and mitigate potential risks before they escalate.

Origins and Innovations

The seed of the MCU was planted back in 2020, in response to an evolving litigation environment, changing cultural views on safety, and the growing impact of large claims on our clients' businesses. In response, JD Robertson developed an innovative data analytics program that acts as our early warning system, ranking claims based on their potential impact and allowing us to focus our efforts effectively. This tool utilizes over four decades of Commercial Auto Data, giving CBCS an edge over other predictive tools that can be bought off the shelf and provide only generalized information.

Once a high-risk claim is identified, our team of experts spring into action. They work together to guide these complex claims from start to finish, working closely with adjusters, legal teams, and other key stakeholders to develop and implement strategic resolution plans.

Their approach includes:

  1. Early Intervention: Through their First Call Settlement program, they address potential issues early, often preventing them from snowballing into more serious problems.

  2. Education: They provide valuable insights to both our internal team and clients about the often-overlooked aspects of complex claims.

  3. Strategic Mapping: They’ve identified challenging jurisdictions across our coverage areas and tailored their approach accordingly.

  4. Continuous Monitoring: They maintain vigilant oversight throughout the claim lifecycle, ready to adjust their strategies as new developments arise.

Success Stories: Making a Real Difference

The MCU is making a real difference in challenging cases. Here are a couple of recent successes:

  • Multi-Claimant Collision Case: A client faced potential exposure of $825,000 from a complex rear-end collision involving two claimants. The MCU's early intervention and strategic negotiations resulted in a total settlement of $275,000. This outcome saved our client $550,000 in potential payouts, significantly reducing their financial exposure. More importantly, it allowed our client to resolve the case quickly, avoiding prolonged litigation and associated costs.

  • High-Stakes Injury Claim: In a case involving substantial medical bills and a high initial demand of $350,000, our client was facing a potentially large loss. Through the MCU's thorough analysis and proactive approach, we settled the claim for $230,000. This represented a $120,000 reduction from the initial demand, directly benefiting our client. Additionally, our swift resolution helped the client avoid the uncertainty and resource drain of a lengthy legal battle.

Driving Improvement Every Day

The MCU's impact extends beyond just handling individual claims. By focusing on these high-impact cases, they are continuously refining their processes and developing strategies that benefit all our clients. For C&B as a whole, the MCU serves as a catalyst for improved collaboration across departments, providing opportunities for team members to learn advanced claim handling techniques.

For our clients, our work translates into tangible benefits:

  • Reduced financial impact from high-stakes claims

  • Better risk mitigation through our proactive approach

  • Access to top-tier expertise when it matters most

  • Minimized long-term impact of severe claims on their businesses

  • More informed decision-making through our educational initiatives

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, the team's goal remains constant: to ensure that when our clients face their most challenging claims, they have the best possible support and outcomes.

In the world of major claims, early action and expert guidance can make all the difference – and that's precisely what the Major Claims Unit delivers, making every day a little bit better, one complex claim at a time.

The MCU's success shows the power of innovative thinking. Do you have an idea to improve our client service or streamlining processes? Share it with your supervisor and help shape our future!
